About

Matuno River is an 8.66-megawatt run-of-river, hydroelectric power plant set to operate in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya, an area greatly prone to precipitation. As the hydropower plant’s name suggests, the power station draws energy from the Matuno River, a tributary of the Magat Dam. The project’s construction is nearing completion, with commissioning to begin by March 2024.

Technical Specifics

Matuno River’s efficiency is evident in its three high-caliber Global Hydro Energy Kaplan-type hydropower turbines, each maintaining a capacity of 2.88 megawatts. The turbines harness power from the robust Ogee crest dam, with the overall system having a net head of 24 meters and 41 cms.

The project will provide communities with 43 GWh of electricity yearly through a 12-kilometer transmission line connected to the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines’ (NGCP) Bayombong substation.

Project Timeline

Magis Energy Holdings acquired the Matuno River project as early as February 2020. The Development Bank of the Philippines’ granted project financing loan was closed by March 2020. That, alongside Magis’ substantive financial contributions as a major shareholder, will allow Matuno River’s construction to be completed by February 2024. The hydropower station’s commissioning period will begin the following month.

Community Impact

Matuno River is set to contribute in mitigating the worldwide problem of climate change and environmental crisis through a decrease of an estimated 31,336 tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. At the same time, the project is set to generate local employment through sustainable hydroelectricity practices.

Matuno River has also formed an agreement with the National Irrigation Authority (NIA) which promises water irrigation of nearby farmlands within the area, alongside support for said farmers.
